Environmental health sciences have interests in the health effects of exposure to chemical, biological or physical agents. The receptors of the effects are environment and human populations; therefore, complex research designs are often necessary, where the statistical methods are increasingly important. For instance, studies on human exposure assessment and health impact of chemicals have traditionally been conducted by analyzing the association between exposure to some specific substances and health effects as well as exposure modifying factors. Various techniques have been developed because the magnitude and the time points of exposure are veiled in most cases. Nowadays, the relationship between low-dose, multi-dose exposure and delayed health effects and the mechanism of toxicity are being looked at in the general population. Large and small birth cohorts are being established around the world to understand the effects of early-life exposure on the later lives. Sophisticated human panels or cohorts are utilized to do so, and the detailed information is converted into databases, where the analyses of the collected data owe the modern statistics in every single case. The present lecture introduces various cases on these research areas and shows how statistic methodology is applied, also suggests future directions of these disciplines. In addition, I would like to deliver advice to students majoring statistics regarding the attitudes and perspectives as professionals and intellectuals.
