The institute was established in March, 1989, as an affiliated research institute in College of Natural Sciences, Seoul National University, for developing statistical techniques and related software, fostering statistical consultation in or out of school, imparting knowledge through open lectures, and conducting research to promote academic-industrial relationships. The institute undertakes outsourcing projects from various research organizations and business enterprises, and performs consultation services for researchers in various areas including pedagogy, medicine, engineering, life sciences, human ecology, social sciences, etc. It also offers regular and special courses for employees, students and researchers with various topics including basic and advanced statistical methods, big data analysis, usages of R, SAS, SPSS packages, etc.

"Seoul National University Science Data Center Knowledge Creation" is one of the leading research centers statistically representative study areas of data science, industrial engineering, computer science, computational science experts, including fused together knowledge from various fields to perform a new study. This center was established in September, 2011, with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea and is currently focusing on following tree research objectives. The first general assignments is Data modeling and theoretical studies. Statistics in the center, developed a large amount of data that can analyze complex statistical model and the likelihood (Likelyhood) theory, and to find the means by application to real data. The second general task is Data Technologies. Focused on computer engineering, studies the visualization model for agile data warehouse and data analysis for flexible integration / management of large amounts of data release. Lastly, the third general task is Knowledge discovery and creation. Focusing on the industrial engineering and medicine, and research methodologies and techniques for collecting and releasing large amounts of data, extract information and knowledge creation system designed for the next generation.

|Network Analysis Basic Research Lab|
The research lab was established in May 2014 by a special funding program for collaborative research financed by NRF of Korea. The research team consists of five faculty members and twenty five graduate students (fourteen Ph.D. and eleven master students). The research organization focuses on developing theoretical foundations for network models and their applications in social and biological network.
